Bureaucrats Can Be Human, Too. Who Knew?
-
We always have stories about lack of common sense in institutional thinking, so when we get one in which an institution does the right thing, we should note that, too. And so we have a man with ALS who wanted one thing before he dies: to see both of his children graduate from the University of Minnesota. He got to see his daughter graduate in 2015, but his son's graduation was scheduled for this spring, and the doctors say he's not going to make it. So, just this once, the school is making an exception and doing a one-person early graduation so that Dad can be there. See? Not so hard. Too many schools would say "we can't, because if we do it for him, we'd have to do it for anyone." Instead, they did the right thing. (Minneapolis Star Tribune)
