BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
MD at Emerson College's WERS/Boston
1. How did you become interested in radio?
I accidentally auditioned to be on-air in college and have been hooked on radio ever since.
2. Who were/are your mentors?
All the professional staff and student leaders at WERS have really taught me so much and have prepared me for my current role as MD at WNRN. My co-workers and my GM, Mark Keefe, at 'NRN have been wonderful mentors as well.
3. Emerson College is a great place to springboard from into a radio career. Tell us how you landed the job at WNRN.
Lots of hard work in the craft and networking. The curriculum at Emerson is very well-rounded, especially when it comes to radio. I've recently found out that there aren't many schools that train students the way Emerson has trained me -- and my experiences at WERS have allowed me to succeed professionally, while interviewing and at work at my current station WNRN.
4. What is your biggest challenge at the station?
Walking into a station that has many different unique working parts and trying to learn, fit in, and grow with them. So far, the biggest challenge has been starting an eight-day fund-drive four days after I started!
5. How would you describe the music on the station?
Stuff that you can play in the car to impress your friends, but you know they'll like, and stuff you can play in the car that your kids and parents won't be offended by. Or, Triple A with Americana and Indie leans.
6. What new artists are you most excited about?
Nulifer Yanya is super-incredible and unique, and the new Tame Impala tracks (really looking forward to hearing the whole thing)
7. Besides being MD, are you handling an air shift?
Middays 10a-2p, and our two-hour music discovery show New Rock Now, Sundays from 8-10p.
8. What would surprise people most about you?
I'm not a natural redhead as you can clearly see from the radio :-)
9. Where do you see yourself in five years?
Hopefully playing a role in the growth of WNRN and public radio as a whole
10. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without ...
... super-boring, but tons of water and coffee.
