BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I began my career in radio at Mississippi State University in 1985 at our college radio station and was the music director. After graduation, I moved to Laramie, Wyoming with a buddy and worked at the NPR affiliate at the University of Wyoming. In 1992 I moved to Santa Fe, NM and worked at KIOT (Coyote Radio)/Santa Fe till 1995 when it was sold. Later that year Ira Gordon and I started KBAC (Radio Free Santa Fe)/Santa Fe after it had gone dark for a year.
1. How did you become interested in radio?
I used to sleep with a tiny transistor radio under my pillow at night when I was five years old in Alabama where, at night, I could hear WLS in Chicago. The Beatles had just arrived in America, and I was hooked.
2. Who were/are your mentors?
Mike Marrone.
3. How long have you been doing mornings at Radio Free Santa Fe?
It has been 18 years.
4. Tell us about all the local people and organizations you have come on the air.
Too many to list but among my favorites are the local non-profits, arts organizations, musicians and theater folks.
5. What has been some of your biggest career highlights?
Interviewing Carrie Fisher at the studio -- Patti Smith, X, to name only a few.
6. What new artists are you most excited about?
Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten, Arlo Parks, Yola, Leon Bridges, Japanese Breakfast, Lucy Dacus, Beabadoobee.
7. What advice would you give young folks who might want to get into radio?
Be true to yourself, be sincere and come from the heart.
8. What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
Everything changes, go with the flow and be adaptable.
9. What would surprise people most about you?
I’m very shy.
