BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
After a successful career in marketing I had an early mid-life crisis, shut down my consulting business, and moved back to Little Rock to get into radio. Four years later, I find myself co-hosting a successful midday radio show, shooting some commercials, and hosting a coach's show. What a life.
1. How did you get into radio- how did you jump from doing a sports web site to getting on the air?
I actually created the website with the help of a couple of local musicians, Ben Byers and Ryan Scott, as an avenue to get on the air. My hope was that I could get my name out there, talk about my site on different shows, and parlay that into a radio position. I can't believe that lame plan worked.
2. What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about my family, friends, sports, and the creativity that goes into doing what I do. I'm also passionate about food and Zing Zang Bloody Mary mix.
3. You've worked color commentary on some Travelers games- is game coverage (play-by-play or commentary) something you're looking to pursue? Other than middays on the Buzz, what's your dream broadcasting job?
This is an interesting question because my career has happened so fast that I didn't plan this far ahead. I thought it would take me years to get on the air instead of six months. But I do enjoy doing play by play. I'd really like to do more writing and I'm currently working on a television show. I really am already working my dream broadcast job.
4. What's the most outrageous thing you've ever done (that you can admit without legal liability)?
The parenthetical legal liability clause is a real snag here. I once went to a truck stop in women's lingerie and yelled obscenities at truckers.
5. Those of us outside Arkansas imagine that sports talk radio in the region is pretty much Razorbacks football 24/7. Is that true? What do you get to talk about on your show, and what other than Arkansas football gets the calls going?
You can make an argument that Arkansas or Little Rock more specifically is not a sports town, that's it's a Razorback town. But I find that the active listeners of our show, the callers and e-mailers, are very interested in the topics of the day, be they political, entertainment, or sports.
6. Of what are you most proud?
I am most proud of the fact that I risked everything to follow my dreams. I drove to Little Rock from Dallas with eleven dollars in my pocket and bussed tables to get where I wanted to be. I'm very proud of that.
7. What do you do for fun?
Everything I do is fun. I like to play golf, fish, watch sports, listen to music, run over squirrels - typical stuff.
8. Who are your mentors and inspirations in the business?
My mentors are Tommy Smith and Roger Scott. They gave me my start in radio, and I learned a lot from those guys. My inspiration is my sister Julie, who has always believed in me.
9. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without __________________.
...watching "Pardon The Interruption." I love to steal their stuff. Show prep.
10. What's the best advice you ever got?
The best advice I ever got was to figure out what you love and try to find a way to make a living out of it. I don't remember any bad advice.
