1) How did you get started in radio- why radio?
I started at my high school's radio station, which was still a rarity in 1986! I did everything from DJ to play-by-play, and I loved it. I've always loved radio, since the days of listening to late night talk with Jim Bohannon, Larry King, and Bruce Williams.
2) What are you passionate about?
I love radio, especially talk. I love to write. I love my family. Not necessarily in that order.
3) You're from Cleveland but you've been in L.A. for a long time now- compare the cities as sports towns. What are the differences you've found between the two markets?
There isn't as much difference as people might think. L.A. sports fans get a real bad rap, but they are just as passionate and devoted as anywhere else. There just happens to be 10 million non-sports fans in L.A. too. Cleveland is a great sports city. If you win there, they'll NEVER forget you.
4) If you hadn't gone into radio, what would you be doing today?
Working in entertainment. Probably television. Another passion of mine. I take pride in knowing the words to almost every TV theme song ever written and performed..
5) You're a rarity in sports media, a mainstream sports guy who's also a big soccer fan. Why do you think it's taken this long for soccer to catch on in America- and will it ever really be a major sport here?
Because most people who are in sports media jobs like to think they know more than the average Joe. Well, in soccer, the media knows diddly, so they dismiss it as unimportant so as to not feel too stupid. But, if you don't like soccer, I'm through trying to convert, just leave me alone to enjoy to best sport in the world, please. Oh, and don't tell me soccer is boring. I've sat through WAY too many 3 hour 15 minute Dodger snooze fests to buy it anymore!
Yes, it's inevitable that soccer will become a top three sport in the US within 25 years.
6) Purely as a listener/fan, who are your favorite play-by-play voices in different sports and why?
Joe Tait (Cavaliers), grew up with him. He's the man. Jon Miller and Joe Morgan are the best! Max Bretos brings passion to soccer as well.
7) Of what are you most proud?
My marriage to my wife, Jeannine, who is such a beautiful person. I was very proud when she won an Emmy a few months ago! It was an amazing moment when they announced she had won!
8) What do you do for fun?
I write a lot. I like to hang out in cafes around my neighborhood, and go for tea here in L.A.
9) Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _____________.
Sky Sports News.
10) What's the best advice you ever got? The worst?
Professionally, the best advice I ever got was to be myself on the air...thank you, Jim O'Brien.
The worst? I guess I just never paid attention to bad advice long enough to remember it.
